22 -23 24 march 2002 SXM Challenge

Get ready for the toughest race in the Caribbean- an all-out windsurfing drag race around St Martin/Sint Maarten. Scheduled for March 9-11 and sponsored by Red Stripe and presented by HIHO, the event will aim to set a standard for speed and endurance on a 42 mile marathon course around the island. A US $1000 prize will go to the first place finisher!

Hosted by Club Nathalie Simon the event will be based at beautiful Orient Beach on French St Martin. In addition to a strong local contingent, participants are expected from France, the US & British Virgin Islands, Antigua, Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The three day event will feature both windsurfing & kiteboarding, though only windsurfers will compete on the around the island race. Competitors may compete in an Open class or on BIC Techno 283 boards. An Adventure class will allow less intrepid participants to race as far as Lowlands on the islands South Western tip.

Open & Techno competitors will be divided into Jr's, Men's, Master's & Women's divisions. Fleet scoring will mean prizes for the top finishers, plus finishers in each division. The Adventure class may be divided into Men's, Master's & Women's divisions.

The actual race around the island will take place on either Saturday or Sunday, March 22 or 23. Organizers will select the best day based on weather conditions. Friday, March 22 and whichever weekend day is not selected for the marathon will feature short course racing and kiteboarding, including a King of the Bay big air rodeo.

The inaugural SXM Challenge is co-organized by Ocean Promotions and Club Nathalie Simon. The event will feature hospitality and entertainment including parties at Bikini Jam, Kakoa & Kon Tiki. Participants and spectators may look forward to ice cold Red Stripe on special throughout the event.
